Flags of Our Fathers

This is the "not so famous " picture taken at Iwo Jima. This is the first flag raising. Not as memorable and famous as the 2nd one. (i just saw the movie last night....another lump in throat movie) After these movies I always look at "old" men differently. It's amazing, one of my uncles dies and I read what a hero he was in the war. I'm always shocked. My father in-law received the Bronze Star (Valor) in WWII and he never talked about it.

I know the 4th is about our independence from England, but this picture moves me and makes me feel proud to be an American.

At our FOAF party at the weekend we met an 86 year-old WW2 pilot, a highly decorated guy who - we'd been told - never talks about the war.

Happy 7/4. (I even do the dating the American way for a change.)

I know what you mean. I get all emotional and patriotic on Anzac Day, which is sort of like Independence Day. It literally tugs at my heart strings. Or maybe it's just my obese heart over reacting to a little emotional stress.

Isn't it amazing how the real heros are quiet and unassuming?
